The Electronic Frontier Foundation and allies want the FTC to reject X Corp's petition. They say the company should not escape privacy rules just because it changed its name from Twitter.
X Corp filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission on May 15. The company seeks to set aside or change a 2022 order that requires regular reports on user data practices. This order came after X misled millions of users about how their personal information was used.
The 2022 consent decree addressed serious violations. X had taken private details like phone numbers and email addresses meant for account security. Instead, the platform used this data for targeted advertising without clear consent from its 140 million users.
EFF and its partners argue that a simple name change does not remove the need for compliance. They believe the privacy protections must stay in place to safeguard user data and prevent future misuse by the company.
