A new Canadian bill, Bill C-260, aims to prevent government workers from suggesting assisted suicide to citizens who have not requested it. This comes after reports of veterans and others being offered medical assistance in dying without asking. The bill seeks to protect vulnerable individuals.
In Canada, a new bill is making its way through Parliament. Conservative MP Garnett Genuis introduced Bill C-260 on February 5, 2026. This bill aims to stop government employees and other officials from recommending assisted suicide to individuals who have not specifically asked about it. The move follows concerning reports where assisted suicide was allegedly offered without a request. For example, a veteran named David Baltzer reportedly received an offer from Veterans Affairs Canada. Another case involved Nicholas Bergeron, a 46-year-old man from Quebec. These incidents highlight the importance of the new bill. It seeks to ensure that medical assistance in dying is only discussed when a person actively seeks information, protecting citizens from unsolicited suggestions.
