Previously, the Poseidon cryptographic hash function was a key part of this plan due to its strong performance. However, recent breakthroughs in what are called 'compact proofs' have made Poseidon less ideal. Researcher Justin Drake noted that these new proof systems now offer better efficiency. This means the Foundation is exploring other options to ensure Ethereum remains secure even as quantum computing technology develops. The goal is to make sure the blockchain can resist attacks from powerful future computers.
