A World Health Organization advisory group has reported no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 resulted from lab manipulation. Natural mutations remain the more likely origin according to their recent conclusions.
The Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens, known as SAGO, was set up by the World Health Organization to investigate how SARS-CoV-2 began. In a new paper, group members stated they found no signs that the virus came from experimental work in a laboratory.
Instead, they pointed to natural processes such as mutations or recombination events in the wild. This conclusion follows earlier efforts by the WHO to trace the pandemic's start. The findings have drawn attention because many experts continue to debate possible sources of the virus.
The report adds to ongoing discussions about transparency in global health research. It stresses the need for further studies to fully understand how the outbreak began and how similar events can be prevented in the future.
